Our Programs

Access

  • The Access program is the “front door” for those in our community who are seeking mental health services. This team conducts screenings to determine if BCMHC is the best place for our community members to receive care and if so completes an initial clinical assessment with the client.

Clinic Based Services

  • Most of our patients receive treatment through our Clinic-based program. Our Master’s level or Licensed clinicians will develop a treatment plan with the client which identifies the strategies and treatments that will help the client recover. Clinicians use a variety of Evidence-based Best Practice treatments such as, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-focused CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and others.

Forensics Services

  • Our Forensics division works closely alongside our community’s Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA) as partners to help those with mental illness in our community. Our Forensics programs:
    • Law Enforcement Agency Victims Services
    • Mental Health Court
    • Hill Finklea Detention Center Mental Health Program

Intensive Services

  • Our Intensive Services team provide evidence-based care to clients and families who have high needs. In our Intensive Community Treatment program and Multi-dimensional Family Therapy (MDFT) program, clients and families see their clinician and other providers several times each week until they are stable and then transition to a lower level of care.

Medical Services

  • Berkeley Mental Health is staffed with Board Certified Psychiatrists, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, and Medical Assistants who work alongside our clinicians as part of an interdisciplinary team. Often our clients benefit from medication therapies and these behavioral health medical specialists prescribe and monitor their effectiveness as a component of our clients’ treatment plan.

Mobile Crisis

  • From time to time, our community’s citizens experience mental health crises and need immediate, emergency psychiatric care. Our Mobile Crisis team is staffed 24/7 and they respond with Law Enforcement officers to any psychiatric crisis located within the community. This team is often called when individuals are suicidal or experiencing psychosis. With advances in Telehealth technologies, we are now able to respond even faster to mental health emergencies because of our technological collaboration with Law Enforcement Agencies.

School Based

  • Our community’s children are not immune to mental health problems. In our School-based division, clinicians are stationed inside many of Berkeley County’s Public Schools, and they deliver services to the students and their families who have mental health needs right on campus. By treating the child within the school, this program significantly reduces disruption to the student’s academic studies which are often caused by the time it takes to travel to the Center for appointments.

Special Operations

  • Our Special Operations division provides important, ancillary services alongside our traditional clinical therapy services.
    • Individual Placement and Support: provides for the vocational needs of our clients by working with them to prepare them to enter the workforce and support them once they find employment.
    • Homeshare: Sometimes, our clients need extra help in order to live independently in the community. By collaborating with several families in the community, our Homeshare clients are able to live in a supportive, safe environment with individuals who desire for those with severe mental illness to live with dignity and independence.
    • Housing Services: Our Housing specialist works with local apartment owners to help our unhoused clients find safe, affordable places to live.
    • Peer Support Services: Certified Peer Support Specialists are individuals in recovery from their own mental health conditions who are specially trained and certified in recovery mentoring and coaching. Oftentimes, it’s helpful to talk with someone “who’s been there before.”

Targeted Case Management

  • Our Care Coordinators assist our clients with access to services and goods that extend beyond mental health care. For example, Care Coordinators help our clients to locate a primary care physician, or to connect with vocational, academic, or other important services. In some cases, they assist with emergency funds to support clients who have a one-time need.

Community Education & Prevention

  • We focus on erasing the stigma associated with mental illness. Through education and consultation activities with clients, families, community professionals and the community, the staff seek to increase awareness of mental health issues, needs and problems.
